Somebody was singing in our neighborhood to Sean Kingston’s Beautiful Girls. It really caught my attention because the person sang the chorus erroneously -
“You’re way too beautiful girl
That’s why it’ll never work
You’ll have me so excited, so excited”
Frankly, I wasn’t excited at the wrong lyrics. I wasn’t sure at first if I knew the correct lyrics and that maybe I was actually wrong to think that it shouldn’t be “so excited”. So I checked it online and it turns out that the correct lyrics should be -
“You’re way too beautiful girl
That’s why it’ll never work
You’ll have me so suicidal, suicidal”
If the guy was singing on The Singing Bee, he’d be ejected outright.
The show is interesting, and fun to watch (admittedly) however, the mechanics should be tweaked. I mean think about it. A contestant has to travel all the way to the studio to participate. There’s the preliminary elimination, then three more rounds.
Imagine during the preliminaries, just one lyrics slip and you’re out of the game. Shouldn’t there at least be a consolation prize? You’d be better off playing in their previous show, Deal or No Deal. I guess that’s why there have only been 3 winners (with one winning twice! – Ms. (or Mr.?) Aiza Seguerra, won a cool Php 2.M in total earnings).
I like the idea that they put artists and professional singers in the show, but that’s just unfair in terms of the contest. I would assume that singers know more lyrics than non-professional singers. My statement holds truest for professional singers who have revived old songs and did covers.
Going back, I don’t mind people singing the wrong lyrics. I’m not a petty officer of the lyrics police. Heh. I even once parodied an old love song and linked it with the issue of a Hong Kong artist who fired too many Filipina maids (a pace setting 21 maids in 3 years, that’s almost one new maid for every month)
What I am particular about are songs with Tagalog lyrics derived from American songs – like my current hate song – Lululu. I blogged about this and people were kind enough to post videos and lyrics. A blog reader – Calvin – posted the lyrics to one of the worst songs I have heard in years. Migs posted the video.
Rafael, another visitor to my post about the sad state of the local music scene, stated that stations like 90.7 and 101.1 cater to the masa, that is why they have songs like Lululu blasting through the airwaves. Usually these stations are played by drivers of public transportation units like jeeps and taxis, and to a certain extent, buses. I once blogged randomly about local transport music and the famous tagline of 102.7 Star FM before.
Read the post to find out what STAR stood for. If there is a stigma about elevator music abroad, I guess the local counterpart is the public transportation music.
Don’t get me wrong though, I don’t mind it if the intent to translate foreign songs into Tagalog is humor – like what Michael V did before. But if it’s like that dreadful Payong song, never mind, I’ll switch the station instead.

I’ll be coming up with something new for my blog soon, so watch out for it. It won’t be glitzy but hopefully it will razzle dazzle you. I have high hopes for my blog as it will soon celebrate its first year anniversary!
I myself couldn’t believe I’ve managed to maintain this blog for that long. I have blogged about so many things – love, current events, music, etc etc. One of my most treasured entries is this old post, and I hope you enjoy reading it. I like to go back to it once in a while to keep me going (on blogging).
